The maroon color is the color of the paper.

1. This method of pastelling is for an advanced artist. The drawing is in more detail than usual. Each section is finished before the next is started. This doesn't mean that I can't go back and change something if I want to. I started on the right side of the head because this was a crucial shape. I also work on the eyes early on. If the eyes aren't right the painting can't succeed.

2. Next I completed the left side of the nose and cheek area. I use white and black charcoal pencils for the fine hairs.

3. The head is nearly done and the shape of the hair below indicated.
